Purdue Engineering Graduate Degrees Top 2020 National Online Program Rankings
Online master’s programs continue to become increasingly popular, for their accessibility, flexibility, affordability, and more. In the same way that students look to resources like rankings to help direct on-campus decisions, online program rankings can help to signal schools and programs that offer the academic rigor, quality, and impact that matches your goals.
The 2020 Best Online Programs Rankings from U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in education rankings, lists Purdue University’s College of Engineering online master’s degree programs as third nationally among the 93 colleges and universities ranked, up two spots since 2019, in addition to prominent positions in specialty degree rankings.
“Learning does not stop when you graduate from college,” said Mung Chiang, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering and Roscoe H. George Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue.
“We will continue to innovate how we teach online—from virtual labs and artificial intelligence-based individualized learning to industry-codesigned MicroMasters programs and affordable master’s degrees—providing the highest quality learning opportunities to the widest possible reach in society.”

What are the U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs Rankings?
U.S. News & World Report is the global authority in education rankings. Across all categories, the organization has ranked more than 1,600 accredited online degree programs, marking the largest ranking to date of distance education providers. For the first time, the 2020 report also included rankings of 18 specialty areas at the master’s level.
The rankings organizers analyze a variety of factors, including the quality of students entering a program, online teaching practices, how the programs employ technologies to allow students flexibility, and the quality of student support services, career guidance, and financial aid resources. In fact, this year, U.S. News reduced the weight of acceptance rates for online master’s programs to give more credit to schools that provide online help with course registration, admissions counseling, and building a resume.
Also weighed are faculty credentials and training, including the degree to which online instructors’ credentials mirror those of on-campus faculty and the training instructors receive to teach distance learners.
